I used to do this for a product... I was finding that some of it was apparently happening asynchronously. I had a separate shell function I grabbed from the first, with all the functions. I eventually put a variable at the bottom of it with a sentinel value, and from the first script, would block until that variable got populated, before running the main function. I think I'd always do it as an inline script. Admittedly I was slopping a lot of mud on the wall back then as a tactic.
