Show HN: Predicting the Greenest time to use electricity (AU)
Hello all, I built this for fun this year. It may be able to help:
- reduce your carbon footprint,
- eg. see the best time to charge your EV
- eg. hook up a smart heating/cooling system?
- learn more about how the renewables transition
Currently limited to the Aus National Electricity Market, sorry...
Feedback and questions appreciated!
- dntcallmeshirly 4y agoThis is so cool!! Where are you pulling all the data from? And how hard do you think this would be to implement on the US energy system?
- perilunar 4y agoFrom the article: "Every 2 hours, GreenForecast.au servers grab data from AEMO, a weather forecast and two other minor sources"
- greenforecast 4y agoThanks! There's one big energy market operator in Australia, they publish heaps of data but it's a pain to process [0][1]. I'm no expert in US energy... Presumably each of your (many) markets will have different available data, but more-or-less equivalent. Probably do-able, but will need to be re-done several times over! - keridil 4y agoThanks heaps, for this. This is really cool and useful!
- greenforecast 4y agoThanks to you! Much appreciated. I hope it can be useful to some people!
- solraph 4y agoThis is super interesting! As an idea, would it be possible to get a totals of AEMO greenness/renewable?
- greenforecast 4y agoSorry, not quite sure what you mean? Do you mean displaying the total power output (aka total demand) in MW rather than as a percentage? (In case that's correct, it's an interesting idea, I've been going back and forth on it, how would that info be useful?)
- solraph 4y agoOh, that was unclear. Having a "Total" option next to the states. That way it would be possible to see the renewable percentage for the grid as a whole.
