The answer to the "Ctrl question" is quite obvious - just take a look at the space cadet keyboard. Just swap Ctrl and Alt so thumbs could be used for a busy Ctrl. This also dramatically improve the experience in other "Ctrl heavy" applications. P.S. I also use Caps Lock for switching layouts and never been happier.
