PG: MIT freedom statement feels like a turning point
- version_five 4y agoWhy? A turning point would actually be positively standing up for academic freedom when it is threatened. Until that happens, it's just an empty statement
- bob29 4y agothe real story here, Peter Gregory goes grovelling back to twitter.
- praveenperera 4y agoBased on Peter Thiel

- ETH_start 4y agoTwitter reversed the policy of banning mastodon links that prompted Graham to leave. In any case, the real story is never the character of the messenger, which says nothing about the merit of the message.
- 0xdeadfa65 4y agoThank you for this comment. Too much gleeful malice distracting from the message.
- simple-thoughts 4y agoIt’s not a turning point until the university administration signs off. Faculty have generally not supported limiting academic freedom, instead it has come from administration and certain student activists.
- alwayslikethis 4y agoA turning point requires a real fight that ends in the defeat of the administrators/managers/"woke" class, such as an agreement to limit powers of the University administration or the ousting of an unusually vocal supporter of these new "safety"-oriented policies.
- jchook 4y agoWhat does "woke" mean?
- pbronez 4y ago> Woke (/ˈwoʊk/ WOHK) is an adjective derived from African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) meaning "alert to racial prejudice and discrimination".[1][2] Beginning in the 2010s, it came to encompass a broader awareness of social inequalities such as sexism, and has also been used as shorthand for American Left ideas involving identity politics and social justice, such as the notion of white privilege and slavery reparations for African Americans. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woke https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woke
- detaro 4y agoRon DeSantis lawyers (so not people likely to give it a positive spin) define it as "The belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them."
- simple-thoughts 4y agoWoke is a term used by white people that was culturally appropriated from AAVE.

- tootie 4y agoDidn't PG quit Twitter over censorship a few days ago?
- jeffreyrogers 4y agoYes
- lettergram 4y agoI think the answer is no, based on the evidence lol
- varenc 4y agofrom https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1605701630481125378 https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1605701630481125378 > I stopped using Twitter because of a policy I didn't like. The policy was reversed.
- lettergram 4y agoI enjoy that PG “quit” Twitter, but within a day or so was back lol Also does this mean Stallman is back?
- dragonwriter 4y ago> I enjoy that PG “quit” Twitter, but within a day or so was back lol He predicted that the policy he quit because of would be reversed and he would be back at the time he quit, the policy was reversed quite quickly, and he was back. Seems…routine.

- fmajid 4y agoUniversity admins have cravenly retreated from the defense of free speech and academic freedom. It’s by actions they will be measured, not words, however necessary,
