I ran into this last week by way of following links away from the story on HN re: Wendy Carlos (who composed and performed the soundtrack to Tron). It was a good watch.
The physical aspects of the production (so many layers of Kodalith plates for every frame, massive work in rotoscoping, multiple exposures using animation cameras to get the distinctive look, etc) are astounding to me. Film production, from a mechanical perspective, must be so much easier today.
- kaveh808 4y agoA good watch indeed. Mechanical film production is all but dead. It's all a digital pipeline now. Curiously, all the new technology has failed to make the creation of VFX movies less costly. We made "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" 20 years after Tron, and the results were also a movie ahead of its time. I guess that happens when you push the technology forward in a big way. Takes a while for audiences to catch up.
