I may have the technical issues wrong, but I'm not sure once you factor in training that the cost is marginal. ChatGPT isn't open source; and unlike stable diffusion you can't simply self-host a trained AI equivalent. What makes ChatGPT effective ...again, as I understand it... is the training which is a result of pouring millions of dollars in it. That may be pocket change in Silicon Valley but outside of there, it effectively puts it out of reach.
