Washington moved fast on TikTok but has made little progress with Big Tech
- uejfiweun 4y agoHuh, it's almost as if the US and its government actually benefits a lot from having massive domestic tech companies with global reach that answer to the government, and don't want to rock the boat in a period of intense global competition with China. But of course, that's crazy talk.
- nullish_signal 4y agoWashington did not "Move Fast" on TikTok in any sense of the word.... TikTok was wildly popular for the entire global lockdown, and Google Trends shows an early spike in Sep 2019. Peak Popularity was 2020, and for 2 years, China has been able to harvest whatever data they want. Using the phrase "moved fast" is laughable. """In a matter of days, the United States is expected to ban federal employees from downloading or using TikTok on government-issued phones or tablets""" "Moved fast". Give me a break!! I wanted Trump to ban it, Nationally, given that it has 3D facemasks that by nature require learning the 3D shape of a person's face, and that China now knows what all of these peoples/kids faces look like from God-knows how many DECADES of selfie footage from TikTok. FFS
