A mentor needs to be willing to be a mentor in the first place.
A mentor should not be someone who gives you "homework" but more about challenging you, your thoughts, help you navigate your thought process and share experiences with you.
That's why mentors are usually at least a couple of years ahead of the mentee.
However, it's not only technical mentorship. In my opinion the even greater part is about navigating the work place: politics, different roles on different teams, expectations, reasoning behind processes and how to play them right to achieve your goals.

I've never had anyone take an overall view and help me put together a game plan. Even the small pieces of advice sometimes turn out to be bad. Like what worked for them doesn't necessarily result in the same success for me. For example, I given vague bad feedback from my manager. I asked if there was someone of my level that was highly regarded that I could ask what types of things they do to get a good rating. Well... they told me all the stuff I was already doing, and I was even doing more. Someone with political knowledge would have been so helpful, because I already had the technical stuff down.
