Is it okay to publish a link to a book with "All rights reserved" on HN?
- ColinWright 4y agoAnswering the first question as asked ... no, I did not obtain permission from the publishers before posting a link to the copy of the book here. Regarding your second question as asked ... that's an interesting question. Taking it literally ... as perhaps one should with legal statements ... We're not reproducing it, or storing it, or transmitting it. We're providing a link to it. When we follow the link it is not we who are "transmitting" the file, it is the site hosting the copy, and I assume they have the rights to "transmit" it. As such, following the link, or even downloading a copy, is not in breach of those conditions as I understand them. That is in contrast to downloading it and then making available on one's own site, which would clearly require explicit permission. Note: IANAL.

- juancn 4y agoHe did not publish it, the site published, he just gave a library reference to it.
- znpy 4y ago> Is it okay to publish a link to a book with "All rights reserved" on HN? That's very debatable. ThePirateBay has been arguing for years that it just stores links and pointers (magnet links and torrent files) to copyright-protected files, not the files themselves.
