Our £2k air source heat pump has been pretty much cost neutral in terms of bills. This was fully expected: we bought it to be more green in the knowledge that the efficiency gain is almost exactly offset by the fact electricity is pricier than gas.
It has roughly halved our the energy we consume for heating though, so it's done what we wanted. Overall, we bought it because it looked like a more cost effective way to go green than switching to an electric car, and i think that's proved to be correct (it achieves roughly comparable energy savings).
