Ask HN: How do you monitor robots or IoT devices in the field?

I want to deploy a couple of semi-automated measurement robots (stationary) in a research lab. I would like to track the robots state. When an error state has occurred I would love to be able to collect some debug information and move it to a server for debugging. Does anyone know any libraries/services that can do something like that?
