You have a problem. So you decide to use micro-services. Now you have N problems and M times as many failure scenarios.
The worst unmaintainable WTF OMG software I have ever seen in my 30+ years career is a 20 years old micro-services system.
The best most maintainable highly scalable software I have seen in my 30+ years career were all monoliths.
- eternityforest 4y agoMicroservices are a variation on UNIX philosophy. I think programmers will use them whether or not they're appropriate because stuff that's small and does one thing is like free cocaine to programmers.
- pjmlp 4y agoDistributed systems are orthogonal to UNIX, predate it, and are unrelated to a famous book quote.
- deterministic 4y agoI completely agree that most developers will pick architectures and tools that are completely wrong for the problems they are supposed to solve. I have seen it so many times that it greatly surprises me when it isn’t true. Micro-services is a perfect example of this. It inherently complicates everything.
