I haven't been through it myself but I've worked with two people that I know didn't have tertiary qualifications (probably other beyond those two that I didn't know about). Those two people were hard workers and were some of the better people I've worked with. If it's what you want to do, go for it. When I'm involved in hiring it's not something I'd care about.
