‘Kidults’ are the biggest driver of sales growth for the toy industry
- fullshark 4y agoI noticed this in my local lego store. The store is slowly becoming more and more about selling nostalgia to adults.
- greggarious 4y agoDid... did CNBC just invent a new word for "manchild"? O_o None of this is new[1], it's just the same type of story from when the Razor came out with a less gendered portmanteau to double the reach of the ad masquerading as news. [1] ˈman-ˌchī(-ə)ld a man who has the qualities of a child : a childlike man https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/man-child https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/man-child
- dragonwriter 4y ago> Did... did CNBC just invent a new word for "manchild"? No, “kidult” is gender-neutral, while “manchild” is gendered.
- Freak_NL 4y agoAlso, the word is in broader use already in some parts of the internet, and wasn't coined by CNBC. They're just using the word that people already tend to use for this phenomenon.

Dear "dragonwriter" (if that is your real name): My comment goes on to state "with a less gendered portmanteau to double the reach of the ad masquerading as news." Please don't listen to the first half of a sentence then reply as if the rest never happened... this is hacker news, not a K Street board room. That was a common microagression I encountered before I left civil society -- ignore a large chunk of what someone said, rephrase the idea as your own, then have others boost you. It's an insufferable tool of third tier JDs, and has no place in hacker communities. Thanks for reading my post on the internet, and sorry if I wasn't... specific... enough. - Greg.
- wiseleo 4y agoRationality goes out the window when you have disposable income and see something you want. At the same time, the overall selection of toys seems to have shrunk. Stores have limited shelf space and dedicated megastores are rare. It's a different story online, but toy shopping is a sensory experience. :)
