It's amazing how the body is reacting to a high DNA damage environment by making lifespans shorter (I'm not saying this is happening intentionally mind you, just that somehow the body is reacting "appropriately"), thus ensuring the species overall has a better chance, even if the individual in question is losing out.
- matt123456789 4y agoThe article seems to say that aging is actually slowed in space (abstract: "...These results suggest that aging in C. elegans is slowed through neuronal and endocrine response to space environmental cues.")
- ambicapter 4y agoOops! That's what I get for not reading the link carefully.
- devmor 4y agoThat take assigns a lot of imaginative intent to a biomechanical process.
- ambicapter 4y agoI literally specified that it wasn't meant to be read as intentional.
- devmor 4y ago"Appropriately" vs "Intentionally" are the same thing, when discussing a low level process that does not have any inherent concept of the resulting effect you assign it to. Your comment implies intent regardless of you specifying a lack of intent. It's the linguistic parallel to me pouring water on my shirt and saying "I'm doing this without getting my shirt wet."
- ambicapter 4y ago> "Appropriately" vs "Intentionally" are the same thing "Appropriately" just means, the correct course of action, which is totally possible to do without intention.
- devmor 4y agoA process that doesn't have intention can't do something appropriately or inappropriately. You wouldn't say your toaster "appropriately toasts bread", it either does it or it fails.
