Yeah, I gave up on iTunes very recently and moved to owntone because iTunes does not play nice with network shares. If the share isn’t available when you launch the app it reverts to storing files locally without telling you. It also can’t really handle artists with arbitrary Unicode in their names, and forgets where the file is under conditions that I could never quite determine. It’s never deleted a file though, not once in 15 years. A poorly-designed SSD whose rubberised coating kept it too toasty did kill a lot of my music, but that’s what backup strategies are for.
