Less earnings sure, but not having a mortgage to pay off any longer helps, as does not having kids to tow around and find accommodation for etc. etc. At any rate there doesn't seem to be convincing evidence that people engage in less international travel over the age of 70 (certainly not for the U.S.) - they may travel less often, but typically for longer periods (but yes, as you say, more often in groups incl. packaged tours).
