Ask HN: Why couldn’t Reddit replace Twitter?

A legitimate question. Celebrities and every day people are notorious for making appearances in Reddit through AMAs. Reddit is a great community already. What’s wrong with either a spin-off feed where you can see content from people rather than communities or something similar?

I anticipate the question about cannibalizing communities in favor of individual profiles but I don’t think those two concepts are incompatible.

'Reddit is a great community already.' I remember when Digg started going to hell, then Reddit was created. All the tech folk moved over there. Now Reddit has become an autistic hive mind and people come to HN.

Because Reddit has a downvote button. I don't think these type of megafon social networks (twitter) plays well with downvotes.

  It'd be a one-line-of-code change to make the downvote button do nothing. I assume they've tried it and rainbows and unicorns did not suddenly appear.

  You mean alternative opinions don't get amplified, they get booted. Reddit has a hive mind. It will not accept anything other than the "correct" opinion.

    Reddit is probably the most correct (best) hive mind available. And is far more valuable than most places to search for resolution for problems that actually work. If someone is a regressive idiot, they should keep their mouth shut, just like they should in real life.

      Reddit is not much different than Youtube comments or IG comments. Just because people are upvoted a lot for being "politically correct" doesn't mean that they are correct.

Because Reddit is a hive mind due to the way upvote/downvote works. It only has one "correct" opinion. Everything else is downvoted and rejected. It's mostly an anonymous network while Twitter isn't. Lastly, Reddit is controlled by the mods in a way. Mods have all the power. Influencers do not.

  Interesting point about Influencers. Havent seen that before. Didnt realize Influencers have a harder time on reddit. So Influencers require a different architecture.

Because one is a forum the other is a microblogging platform.
