In America, you use the word "liberalism" to mean "left-of-centre", while in the rest of the world the word "liberalism" refers to a specific centrist political ideology. Neoliberalism—at its core—is a term that comes from social science academia and refers to the post-WW2 trend of liberal ideological policies replacing e.g. traditional social democratic policies around the world. Related terms: free-market capitalism, Washington Consensus, Third Way.
