I think we'll probably see a lot of this kind of synthesis as our ability to model grows stronger. Seeing yourself as a collection of billions of separate but symbiotic, sometimes competing organisms rather than as one coherent one is a big paradigm shift which will likely result in a lot of fruitful theories and hopefully eventually treatments for disease and illness. Crucially, we're getting to a place where we can model some of this and then directly attack several other pieces which were inaccessible to us before due to sheer amount of complexity.
