Bah. I’ve already used it to great success as an editor or assistant. It doesn’t need to be right. The fact that it sounds convincing is great when it helps me format communication. I want to sound convincing too! If it generates code for me I can try it myself to see if it works.
It isn’t perfect but it’s good enough to be extremely useful.
- spaceman_2020 4y agoAs someone learning to code just to get a prototype off the ground, it's been invaluable. I don't know if the code it creates is elegant or efficient, but I do know that it works. For me, that's more than enough. I seriously can't work without it anymore. Even Googling for answers seems like a primitive exercise.
- bravetraveler 4y agoI've learned it works great as a counterpart - you can say "I don't think iterating that is efficient, what if we move the file handle outside" It can somewhat reliably pick up if you're on the right path or not I don't know, is it a trick... or is someone buying into it completely looking to be fooled?
- spaceman_2020 4y agoMy wife, who is a PhD scholar, has been using it to cut down her research time drastically. She is essentially using it as a search engine. What would otherwise take her 10 tabs and 20 Google queries now takes just 1-2 chatGPT prompts.
- bravetraveler 4y agoDitto! It's been incredibly useful for prototyping for me. Start with a basic script and slowly build it out I've made so many CLI tools and then simply added UIs to them It can be coached super well, keep progress small
