Reading his book, based on the blog I guess, it shares the same name, I learned how serious Microsoft are about backwards compatibility -- or at least was.
A program not following the rules, but somehow worked in Windows 3.x but not in Windows 95? Make Windows 95 identify it and recreate the bug that made it work in the first place.
The book goes on and on about all these kinds of hacks and tricks to make various program and drivers work, despite said program/driver was crap to begin with.
