I can only imagine either the gas lever broke off, leaving him unable to stop the jet, or the jet itself had some sort of malfunction and decided to eject the pilot. Mind that these vertical takeoffs take a lot of computer control just to keep the jet balanced. Either that or incompetence, but I like to think people are on average competent at what they do for a living.
