geopandas works well (in my experience) with Folium. The only thing that kind of sucks, IMO, is that the heatmaps are wonky in Folium. You can only adjust the radius, but the zoom affects it greatly - so you don't really get a truthful heatmap. I work A LOT with heatmaps, and have used Folium a lot - but in the end I always end up creating these hacky solutions involving square grid polygons (with pre-defined distances/sizes), and the polygons I want to look at in the map.
