Wind turbines can kill birds, but not as many as fossil fuels and other impacts
- phillipseamore 4y agoThought it was strange that they claimed nuclear killed 2x as many birds as wind turbines. Turns out it's based on a 2012 study with 2009 data: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/1943815X.2012.746993 https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/1943815X.2012.74...
- bramblerose 4y agoWhy would the year of the study matter? The numbers are per GWh. Or do you expect modern wind turbines to be significantly different in deaths/GWh?
- 32gbsd 4y agoSo we are bird counting now? What is the upper bird limit?
- m0llusk 4y agoMore like trying to find out what works and what doesn't. One of the first big wind farms in the US was in the Altamont Pass which turns out to be a golden eagle nesting site and the result has been a serious problem with a lot of endangered birds killed. This piece appears to point out that context matters and not building large wind farms in raptor gathering and nesting areas is a way to reduce conflicts. Next up, do high pressure chemical reaction vessels belong in day cares?
- dicknuckle 4y agoWait till people hear about the number of birds killed by skyscrapers sheathed in the wrong glass (most of them).
