I think battlefield 4 (pc) has the best of both worlds: official servers and community hosted ones. It had its drawbacks, however: community servers often spoofed player count and you would end up joining almost empty lobbies when you thought it was a full server. Also, when the playerbase was declining, it felt harder to find servers that you enjoyed to play on. Overall I felt it was a great experience. I hope more games take this approach in the future.
