Well
Corrected, True: OpenVMS has an Intel build made public
Source: https://vmssoftware.com/about/openvmsx86/ https://vmssoftware.com/about/openvmsx86/
They don't offer hobbyist licenses, which is an absolutely braindead decision.
IBM AIX is still developed
Linux added support to SGI Octane machines
It is not ENTIRELY DEAD
edit:
This was a wrong statement made by me:
"Wrong: HP HPUX has an Intel build in the pipelines", my memory failed me. Corrected above.
- lproven 4y ago> HP HPUX has an Intel build in the pipelines It does? That's news to me. And to the Internet in general AFAICS. [[Citation needed]]
- unixhero 4y agoYou are correct, see my modified statement in my original comment. VMS, not HP-UX
- lproven 4y agoOh, I know about that! :-) I wrote about that months ago, when it reached shipping status. https://www.theregister.com/2022/05/10/openvms_92/ https://www.theregister.com/2022/05/10/openvms_92/ I was a VMS sysadmin in the early 1990s. This was very pleasing news.
- chasil 4y agoThere was an internal x86 port of HP-UX that was never released. https://www.theregister.com/2012/05/23/hp_project_blackbird_redwood_hp_ux/ https://www.theregister.com/2012/05/23/hp_project_blackbird_...
- lproven 4y agoOK, that's interesting. I wasn't an employee at the Reg back then and I missed that one.
- chasil 4y agoGoogle "hp-ux x86" and it's the 4th hit (right now).
- lproven 4y agoNot for me it's not. I did Google it before posting. A few pages down, there is a Slashdot story: https://hardware.slashdot.org/story/13/11/06/1354237/hps-nonstop-servers-go-x86-countdown-to-itanium-extinction-begins https://hardware.slashdot.org/story/13/11/06/1354237/hps-non...
- gumboza 4y agoIt's certainly not dead. Unix workstations are still really popular for general purpose use. You can go in a local retail chain and buy an Open Group certified Unix 64-bit RISC workstation for £639 here (Argos)...
- kichimi 4y agoWould be nice if you had mentioned it was an M1 Mac Mini, I got excited for a moment. https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8802877?clickSR=slp:term:apple%20mac%20studio:12:39:2 https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8802877?clickSR=slp:term:app...
- gumboza 4y agoCorrect. Certification https://www.opengroup.org/openbrand/certificates/1217p.pdf https://www.opengroup.org/openbrand/certificates/1217p.pdf
- indigodaddy 4y agoAbsolute nothing like of which you speak exists in the US. Pretty cool that is happening in England (assuming)
- RichardCA 4y agoDo you have any further info? I checked argos.co.uk and couldn't find anything. I'm not really trying to call you out, I just don't think any of the Open Group certified Unix versions was ever licensed for the consumer market. I would need to see hard evidence to be proven wrong about that. https://www.opengroup.org/openbrand/register/ https://www.opengroup.org/openbrand/register/
- gumboza 4y agoMac Mini M1: https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8802877 https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8802877 Certification of the OS: https://www.opengroup.org/openbrand/certificates/1217p.pdf https://www.opengroup.org/openbrand/certificates/1217p.pdf which is linked on the page you posted. It's a proper Unix machine. Costs slightly more than a nickel :)
- classichasclass 4y agoYou can buy a Raptor POWER9 box, too. I think even a "low-end" Blackbird would easily qualify as a modern Unix workstation (the bigboy Talos II definitely would).
