Andy Rubin: Android Had A Jolly Good Christmas With 3.7M Activations
- deleted 15y ago[deleted]
- GFischer 15y agoAnecdotal, I know, but here in Uruguay it's the hot thing: national carrier Antel ran out of its shipment of Galaxy Aces on just two days, it generated the kind of waiting associated with iPhones in the U.S. Android phones have definitely replaced Nokia phones as the phones to buy here. Motorola used to have a following here and capitalized by introducing their own Android phones, but Nokia was basically replaced by Samsung (and chinese manufacturers like Huawei). I'm one of the 3.7 million :) (got myself a Galaxy Ace).
- pinaceae 15y agowhat are the price points between the galaxy ace and the iphone in uruguay?
- GFischer 15y agoGalaxy Ace is U$ 400 free, U$ 150 with a 2-year U$ 20/month contract. iPhone 4 is U$ 1000 free, U$ 500 with 1-year U$ 50/month contract, U$ 300 with 2-year, and cheaper with the U$ 75/month contract. The 4s is about U$ 200 more expensive with each plan. Most everything here in Uruguay has a 100% or more import tax, so it's not a matter of importing them (smuggling, OTOH, is highly profitable, but heavily policed).
- ConstantineXVI 15y agoIt's worth pointing out that the Ace is much closer to the 3Gs vs. the 4 in terms of components; naturally it'll have a price advantage. Not to say price is the only reason for it's success (I presume the 3Gs is on sale there as well), just that we're comparing two different classes of device.
- listic 15y agoWhat's so special about Galaxy Ace? Also, did it just reach Uruguay? It says it was released in February: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_ace_s5830-3724.php http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_ace_s5830-3724.php
- GFischer 15y agoIt's been available in Uruguay since March or so, but it has just been sponsored by the state carrier Antel, which means it finally is available for the masses with a cellphone contract subsidy.
- Mavrik 15y agoAnectodal - here in Slovenia all mobile phone operators just ran out of all Galaxy Nexus shipments (same as they did when S2 launched). Pricing is practically identical vs. iPhone (both S2 and GN sell for about 400-430€ in widely-used subscription packages vs. 430€ for iPhone 4S 16GB).
