Apple and Google Are Taking over the In-Car User Experience
- xrayarx 4y agoIf anybody working on this, is reading this: please think of the option to put rear few mirrors or rear view cameras on these screens, so we can get finally rid of the “normal” mirrors.
- jleyank 4y agoNormal mirrors don’t break, so why introduce single point of failures in a currently distributed system? My cars last 8-10 years, while my tablets last 3-5. Unless the new, fancy stuff is swappable there’s going to be a whole lot of dead glass driving about the highways. And without the tactile feedback of traditional buttons it’s bloody difficult to turn things on/off without looking down.
- al2o3cr 4y agoIMO this omits the biggest factor: because most car manufacturers are absolutely AWFUL at building software that works well. I've got a Honda that's one model year too old to support CarPlay. It instead only supports "HondaLink", an epic hack involving a simultaneous USB + HDMI connection (yay dongle /s) and hacktacular apps written with PhoneGap that barely work and wouldn't get a passing grade in Babby's First App Design course. The apps haven't seen an update in years.
