I was an editorial illustrator, only for a couple years, a little over a decade ago now. Thank god I no longer have skin in the game.
With Midjourney V4 I'm getting publication ready results about 30% of attempts, and the rest of the time I struggle to get stuff that's clean and on point. I tend to get good results right away, or I can't get what I want at all. I'm sure these odds will improve as the models and tools for manipulating them improve.
What's shocking is how trivially easy it is to emulate another artist's style. I have always loved and admired Moebius's work. He can convey such a strong effect with do few lines. I've studied his work carefully, learned the same tools and drawing techniques, and on many occasions have tried to emulate his style.
What comes out is a pale imitation. Up until quite recently nobody could imitate his style. Style was too ephemeral to steal. Now it's trivial.
