- fxtentacle 4y agoThis reads like a paid advertisement. Plus it has a disclaimer: "AppleInsider may earn an affiliate commission on purchases made through links on our site."
- alwillis 4y agoEvery story on this website, like thousands of others, makes money from affiliate links. That doesn’t change the authenticity of the article; this is just the latest in a series of stories about Apple’s health and safety tech coming to aid or saving someone’s life.
- marssaxman 4y agoIt does read like a paid advertisement, but it's just rewording a Reddit post, from someone whose extensive and varied commenting history gives the impression of genuine personhood (I snooped).
- kobalsky 4y agosadly that doesn't mean it's not at ad at all. buy active reddit account[1], post fake story on reddit, pay upvote farm, create news article filled with affiliate links, post everywhere do you think advertisers were going to stay with their arms crossed when everyone installed ublock? 1: https://www.playerup.com/accounts/redditaccount/ https://www.playerup.com/accounts/redditaccount/
- actuallyalys 4y agoI'm sure some advertisers do that, although it seems unnecessary in this particular case—"my phone let me know my family member crashed" seems like the kind of story people would post about of their own volition. Unfortunately, you won't even have to wait that long, as there are over 17,000 crashes per day in the United States [0]. - WildGreenLeave 4y agoAn interesting anecdote, recently I was driving to Switzerland to do my early skiing trip. This is a trip I've done more times then I can count, and it was never an issue. However, this time I drove there during night (normal) but also during heavy snowfall. Heavy enough that I couldn't see the road and that I couldn't even pay attention to the navigation other then follow it. The end result was me getting on a 60kmh road (instead of the highway) where no one drove for hours. I actually got in a car accident, car total loss and hit a fence. It was bad enough that both a towing company, police and the fire department showed up. Right after the crash, my iPhone sounded an alarm and it actually notified me that I had an N amount of seconds before it would automatically call the alarm number. I cancelled that, and then it asked if I wanted to notify my emergency contacts. I also cancelled it because the accident didn't cause any physical problems. When that moment happend I thought "wow, this is actually good. Imagine I was unconscious and I couldn't call the emergency number. I am surprised that it is so accurate and never gave a false positive." I left it on and didn't think twice about it. Fast forward 3 days later (today), I spent multiple hours skiing and at some point I got on a lift and I heard the same alarm. What happened? I slightly (really, slightly) bumped into the turning pole, or maybe the seat itself, not sure and it detected a crash. It actually called the emergency number before I could cancel it and it almost notified my emergency contacts. Interestingly enough, for some reason it couldn't connect to the alarm number. I don't know if it was the mountains or anything, but it called and failed. Anyway, in conclusion: I turned it off.
