Ask HN: Are we headed towards a slowdown of programming tools adoption?
A few scenarios:
- A dev is two layers deep in plugins / frameworks / libraries and realizes it would be quicker to work with stdlib or core.
- A dev reaches ORM caveat territory where exceptions require a careful path, and they drop to native database language.
- (From the management side) because of various fears the decision is made to roll-our-own instead of importing a package.
I hypothesize these scenarios are all examples of cost-benefit analysis. Therefore I expect the rate of adoption of new tools to gradually decrease as programmers reach the threshold where adoption cost outweighs benefits. Indeed, I would even expect a reversal: programmers flocking towards lower levels of abstraction, abandoning some tools in the "rebound."
Is this being seen in the industry, or is my hypothesis (or conclusion) off-base?
