What did Unix fans learn from the end of Unix workstations?
- mikece 4y ago"Another lesson from that era is that it's in everyone's interest to cooperate. If half a dozen bitterly opposed vendors could cooperate to create CDE, how come now each major Linux distro has a dozen very similar desktops? Especially since most of them are, to say the least, visibly inspired by Windows." I have wondered this many times. Take your pick (I personally would pick Xfce) of desktops but if the distros could "Unite the clans" and collaborate on one desktop to rule them all I think it would help. Yes, I realize that everyone wants slightly different features and the one selected might not be the most perfectest choice but Windows proved that an inferior product didn't stop people from getting productive work done. (And then after that we find a way to agree on a singular package manager?)
