Engineer is a protected designation in other trades. Especially civil and structural engineering. It requires some pretty heavy testing, a few years of apprenticeship, project reviews by mentors, recommendation letters, and a few other hoops. Software is so much more broad than the physical sciences that I cannot imagine a way to generalize a pathway for software engineers.
