> PGT-P is different because it can confer seriously beneficial advantages rather than merely assisting in avoiding miscarriage and having a child of average health. Large enough batches of embryos or enough rounds of PGT-P from even average parents could make a child significantly healthier than average. Furthermore, since psychological traits are genetically influenced, parents could select children based on traits like conscientiousness, intelligence, or positive affect. A concept that many people find unacceptable.
If this is not dystopian i don't know what is
- derbOac 4y agoOne source to take comfort in is that this debate will almost certainly be superceded by discussions of gene therapy. Embryo selection can only select against embryos, which even if perfect in its accuracy, can only result in accept or reject decisions. Gene therapy will be more targeted and precise, and allow for retention of individuals per se. Whether it's more or less dystopian I don't know, but I don't think society is prepared for the ethical consequences it implies.
- jacooper 4y agoThis is definitely more dystopian, as your going from filtering nature humans, to modifying them. Society is probably going to end up being made from the a couple of the same traits, juts how RPG games let you choose characters each with different strength and weaknesses. And of course the gap between the poor and rich is no longer just about resources and opportunities, its then also genetic superiority, a recipe for huge inequality. That's all without talking about side effects, maybe because of data biases, or government control to influence genes in a way that suits the government or million other possibilities of influencing humans in this way.
