"Calculators will end high-school math"
- skyyler 4y agoChatGPT (or more accurately, technology like it) has the potential to change English class much like the affordable pocket calculator changed math class. Do children still do rote memorisation of things like times tables?
- WheelsAtLarge 4y agoMaybe, but what will happen when we rely 100% on these apps? Also, if we don't use it we lose it. Will the overall Human IQ drop? It seems possible. Does it matter? Case in point, I won't and can't survive alone in a jungle for a long time. I don't have the knowledge. Yet, our ancestors did it.
- LoveMortuus 4y agoI don't think much will be lost, nor do I think that Human IQ will drop. Because depending on your cognitive ability, how you use and how effectively you use the AI is different and changes. Basically: You don't know, what you don't know. The wider and creative you can think, the more use you can bring out of the AI. Because we have calculators, people that have the required knowledge can calculate amazingly complex things. I think AI will be kind of like logic gates are. You can do simple stuff with it, but if you really dive deep and study everything you can create a CPU that's capable of ray-tracing and playing Doom. Or in other words: It doesn't matter how expensive or powerful the tool is, if you don't know how to use it or what to use it for.
- WheelsAtLarge 4y agoThat's a valid argument. AI will just become a tool that will help us find a higher point of knowledge.
- skyyler 4y ago>if we don’t use it we lose it Awfully similar to Socrates’ reasoning against the written word. Also, our ancestors didn’t survive alone in the jungle, they survived in groups in the jungle. Humans are social creatures. A single human wouldn’t get very far in any environment.
