They are being oppressed in a variety off ways each day that they are and are not aware of. Are people on China happier today because of additional wealth (but also additional pollution / increased loneliness)? Surveying them would be like asking citizens in cold war era Russia if they are happier than before and if they are lacking what the west has. They might reject it but they don't fully understand what they are missing.
