And the sources are completely wrong at best, and intentionally deceiving the public and congress at worse.
The relevant measure used to arrive at this claim is Q-plasma. This is the ratio of the laser energy which actually reaches the reaction chamber vs. the heat produced in the reaction. In this case, that is, based on initial claims, 1.2. That sounds impressive.
It's not. The problem is that Q-plasma is meaningless. All that matters is total energy input, vs. electrical power produced, or as it is commonly called, Q-total. Even the best plasma lasers have an efficiency of 10%. This means that 10 times more energy is required than actually reaches the chamber. Add to this that converting heat to electricity is at best 50% efficient, and the estimated Q-total of this experiment is a measly 0.06.
In other words, far from being a massive achievement, it is an absolute nothing burger. 21 megajoules in. 1.25 megajoules out.
This nonsense has got to stop.
