Just a guess, but I'd reckon that computer science/software engineering went past the point where one person could know all of the important stuff around the time that Donald Knuth started writing TAoCP... and even then it took a Donald Knuth to do anything remotely approaching an exhaustive treatment of the field. It's okay to not be Donald Knuth.
