No one "gets anxiety" from following HN.
Some people think anxious thoughts, which they identify with and take seriously as if they are objectively real and significant occurrences, which then produces physiological changes that are interpreted as feelings of anxiety, about things they read on HN.
- stingraycharles 4y agoThis type of argument can be made about anything, and isn’t really constructive. If HN triggers an anxious thought in someone, it’s more than fair to say it’s the cause. Otherwise anything can always be explained as if it’s some “physiological change” or whatever, due to previous experiences in someone’s life. It’s also not relevant to the question OP was asking, as it doesn’t matter for the answer whether or not HN is the direct cause or not — everyone knows what OP meant, and it doesn’t affect the answers anyway.
- ergonaught 4y agoIt is entirely relevant and entirely constructive. The question posed is about whether others get anxiety from, paraphrasing, not keeping up with all the crap going on in computing today. The answer is that no one gets anxiety from all the crap going on in computing today. It is incorrect to claim that all the crap going on in computing today "triggers" anything. Thoughts about all the crap going on in computing today occur. Taking those thoughts seriously, as if they are significant and objectively real occurrences, prompts the physiological changes that are then interpreted as anxiety. Yes, that applies to most things in human subjective experience, which is a testament to its immense value, rather than a lack of value. The question was not phrased, at least, as "how does one constructively manage continued professional development with all the crap going on in computing today", but about anxiety over it. That perceived anxiety is the outcome of thoughts like, "There is too much to keep up with, I cannot understand it all, I will fail to provide for myself, I will be homeless and starve to death." But, hey, dismiss and downvote. Least resistance thinking is the way.
