This is due to a loss of locality of culture. Artists get casted nowadays because the cultural institutions and scenes they grow out of are running dry. And I don't mean they lack talent, they lack the audience and they lack the infrasctructure. It's getting too expensive for the latter two. Not to mention that physical spaces (again: cost) have been replaced more and more (especially due to Covid) by virtual spaces for meeting your audience and your peers. So the big media companies who depend on new talent to sell billions dollar worth of culture resort to casting for their A&R. It's a cheaper and faster way to grow an audience for an artist or celebrity.
