I had an encounter with Child Protective Services in San Francisco California.
The child, my infant daughter, was taken from her mother right after birth by CPS due to abuse. The abuse amounted to serious, pre-natal exposure to multiple drugs.
It took seven months and eight visits to Family Court for me to get custody of my daughter. I was clean and sober for 14 years, free of intoxicants of any kind. I was (and I still am) gainfully employed in the tech sector.
I took a DNA test to prove paternity with 99.999% certainty. I went through months of supervised visitation as well as psychological and psychiatric examinations.
Through all of this, I was thinking that most people just get to take their kids home from the hospital and these CPS bureaucrats are poking and prodding and examining every corner of my life. I found out later that they had been moving along on a parallel track to put my daughter up for adoption.
My daughter is 11 years old now and, apart from being born, she has never met her mother.
