Reading the comments on the bug, supporting comments for JPEG XL started flowing in there around 24 August 2022 (with a couple early ones on Aug 16 and 17). Was there some publicity about JPEG XL around that time, and did someone urge others to request Google to enable it by default? I can imagine that that was when the decision process at Google started whether to keep or remove it. The reasons for removal given on October 31 are rather vague and seem to underestimate the interest in the format.

- lifthrasiir 4y agoThat's when Adobe formally expressed a support for JPEG XL (comment 61), which is a big milestone by its own and people started to push Google to finish the experiment in lieu of that event, as everyone expected that it will land at some point, most likely shortly after libjxl reaches 1.0.
