An Awesome List of Falsehoods Programmers Believe about National Borders :-/ should probably include an item a la "Wrong: at any time, the border between two nations / countries / states is a single line that partitions an area such that every given point either belongs to the one or the the other, or a third one".
To my surprise, OpenStreetMap's treatment of the disputed northernmost part of the Dutch–German border is such that they display both versions, with helpful labels that indicate the region claimed by both countries.
