This is pretty dystopian, the article states he was with his wife, making a joke based on some obscure reference, and most importantly, not on the job and in his private life
. Is the joke in bad taste? Perhaps. But it Seems like a weird reason to nuke an exec’s 22-year career over
- acdha 4y agoI'm curious whether there's any backstory — sometimes things like this are more of a “last straw” situation where someone went with a straightforward policy violation because it's harder to sue over.
- sct202 4y agoIt does seem like they already had reasons to not want him or his role considering his org was broken apart and his role wasn't backfilled according to the article.
- lazyeye 4y agoI wonder what those reasons were such that they couldn't be stated openly and instead they needed some unrelated pretext to sack him?

- _8j50 4y agoHe posted it in a public platform and he is an executive. You can sneeze wrong and get fired for an exec role, that's why they get paid the big bucks, so they represent the company and lead , no such thing as clocking out. They don't get paid because they work hard. A senior apple engineer doing the same thing wouldn't get fired.

I think execs should be more mindful of what they say, even outside of work because of the potential reputational damage to the company. However, firing the exec for something like this is a bit much. Everyone makes silly, dark, sexual jokes privately - outside of work. They should have warned him and given him more training about conduct outside of work.
