The scandal of researchers paid less than a living wage

- jleyank 4y agoRemember that people studying for their PhD are students as well as researchers. They can get teaching or research grants for living expenses but that’s dependent on the field of study. And the teaching work is at best irrelevant to their line of research, if not a time sink delaying completion. Such grants also include tuition, which can be significant at some schools. Treating grad school as a job will result in a (much) longer process as some amount of calculations or experiments must be carried out successfully to get anywhere. Using the 10k hour analogue, they have to be spent no matter how you partition time. And note you can be scooped - the work has to be “new” so there is always a risk that somebody else is doing something similar.
