Is there something that makes ADHD meds harder to make and ramp up production? It seems like TikTok and Instagram in particular are convincing young adults that they all have ADHD or Asperger syndrome leading to a shortage in relatively recent history.
- chrsig 4y agoOnly from a legal perspective. Most adhd meds are highly controlled substances, various forms of amphetimines and methylphenidate. In the US they're schedule II substances, so treated the same as opiate based pain killers.
- opportune 4y agoYes, the DEA determines how much each provider can make per year. So when a company like Teva that is responsible for 30% of production fails to produce it for 2 months because they won’t pay their mail room workers enough, there is no slack in the system to make up for the lost production

- smittywerben 4y agoYes, there is a federal yearly quota of Schedule II ADHD drug product that each manufacturer is allotted. I don't know the exact process but can read more in detail at these links. https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/21/1303.11 https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/21/1303.11 https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2022/12/02/2022-26351/established-aggregate-production-quotas-for-schedule-i-and-ii-controlled-substances-and-assessment https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2022/12/02/2022-26...
