Another article (https://www.versobooks.com/blogs/5515-we-are-the-new-school https://www.versobooks.com/blogs/5515-we-are-the-new-school) mentions how administration is "a revolving door of administrators who seem accountable to no one."
This is a major problem in higher education right now. Administrators are often faculty or former faculty and may or may not have any real management experience but are expected to suddenly manage hundreds if not thousands of people. Once they realize they are in over their head they can easily retreat back to being faculty as they have tenure.
- golemotron 4y agoA lot of higher education now is pantomime to create value for a credential. I expect it to get even more ridiculous.
- yamtaddle 4y agoFWIW that article doesn't say the former-faculty-as-admin thing is a problem in this case, unless I overlooked that bit, and the usual complaint I see about higher ed is more about top-level admin being the opposite of that—part of the professional-administrator class without real teaching experience who don't understand or care to understand the front-line staff, look down on them, and who are creating vast new bureaucracies full of more of the same sorts of people.
