Colin Furze’s tunnel: 3 years in the making
- tharkun__ 4y agoI was about to submit this, not sure where I found it but saw this was submitted recently. I have a few questions for the HN crowd, specifically people w/ an actual structural engineering background, in case this ever makes it somewhere people see it: Is this going to hold up? Is the guy crazy? I ask this because the guy apparently is a plumber by trade and digging a tunnel in that kind of ground w/ what's on top of it seems crazy to me if you don't actually have a background that let's you accurately calculate the kinds of supports that are needed for this kind of tunnel. Are those pieces of what looks like 'scrap metal' spot welded on gonna hold up anything if push comes to shove e.g. water infiltration?
- cristoperb 4y agoI'd also be curious to see an analysis by a structural engineer. There was a post to r/AskEngineers asking about it last year, which was also discussed on hn at the time, but it was before the tunnel was completed: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskEngineers/comments/oh0vt0/how_safe_is_the_colin_furzes_tunnel/ https://www.reddit.com/r/AskEngineers/comments/oh0vt0/how_sa... https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27792683 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27792683
