It sounds like it was done completely haphazardly. 1. As soon as effective altruism becomes about glamour and extravagance, you attract the type of people who don’t care about the cause (clearly already true) 2. Obviously buying a castle is not the best investment the EA could be making and using that as the excuse is just weird. Of course none of this should be surprising as the Effective Altruism is essentially a PR stunt for people who do financial crimes.
